Chicago Cubs Hire Dale Sveum, Sources Say

My sources have confirmed that the Chicago Cubs have hired Dale Sveum as manager. EDIT: It is now official, press conference on Friday morning.

Sveum has received a 3 year deal with an option. Sveum chose the Cubs over the Red Sox earlier today. Mike Maddux is believed to have been the Cubs #1 choice but backed out due to ongoing family concerns.

Sveum managed the Pirates AA team for 3 years. He was named Top Managerial Prospect by Baseball America in 2003. He was 3rd base coach under Terry Francona  in Boston for 2 years before moving to Milwaukee  to be bench coach. In 2007, Sveum gave up his job as bench coach to go back to being a 3rd base coach, still for the Brewers organization.

In 2008, Sveum was named interim manager after Ned Yost was fired. Sveum went 7-5 in his 12 games. Ken Macha was named manager for the Brewers the following season. Sveum stayed on, this time as hitting coach.

The Chicago Cubs fired Mike Quade soon after the end of the regular season.
