Concepcion Added To Peoria: Will Start Wednesday

The 20 year old LHP out of Cuba that the Cubs signed this winter, Gerardo Concepcion, will make his official minor league debut tomorrow evening for the Cubs A affiliate, the Peoria Chiefs.

Concepcion got a later start than the rest of the Cubs this spring training due to his late signing. After Peoria’s season started, Concepcion stayed back in Extended Spring Training to build up arm strength.

Concepcion received a $6 million deal from the Cubs this winter. Yoenis Cespedes, Jorge Soler, and himself all defected from Cuba last fall in order to chase their dreams of being major league players. The Cubs, interested in all three Cubans, are still interested in Soler after missing out on Cespedes, who was signed by the Oakland Athletics.

Soler has had issues establishing residency in the Dominican Republic thus far. As soon as he is eligible to be a free agent, the Cubs are expected to offer him a deal around $27.5 million.
