Marlon Byrd to the Red Sox

UPDATE: Marlon Byrd has confirmed that he is heading to Boston, per Bruce Levine.

UPDATE #2: Marlon Byrd to the Red Sox for Michael Bowden and a PTBNL (most likely a 2011 draftee.) Cubs will pick up most of Byrd’s remaining contract.

With the return of The Stranded Cub to the interweb comes the news that the Boston Red Sox are on the heels of acquiring CF Marlon Byrd. Byrd had gotten off to a horrid start for the Chicago Cubs this season batting a mere .070 in his first 13 games. Bruce Levine of ESPN Chicago says the deal should be done today with a LH reliever and prospect coming back to the Cubs.

Byrd has been very well relieved during his time in Chicago. He’s a player that leaves everything out on the field each and every day. He was a leader in the clubhouse and a great example for the kids who on their way up to the big leagues. However, at this point in his career, he is easily replaceable.

The Cubs have top prospect Brett Jackson ready in Iowa and needed to pave the way to open up a gig for him within the next month. Anthony Rizzo is also due up within the next month or two meaning another position in the OF may need to be opened up. Rizzo will take over 1st base, but with LaHair hitting well he may be moved to a corner OF position soon thereafter.

Oh behalf of Cubs fans I’d like to thank Marlon Byrd for simply caring and showing us that with his play on the field. While we all saw this coming for about a year now, we are sad nonetheless. You will be missed Marlon.
